Contaminants range from naturally-occurring minerals to man-made chemicals and by-products. While many contaminants are found at levels which may not cause immediate discomforts or sicknesses, it may cause severe illness such as kidney problem, liver damage, cancer and other serious ailments over time. Chlorine and fluoride which are commonly used to treat municipal water supplies are also toxic and are known to have significant adverse effects on humans.
